Experience The Forgotten World

Whether you are heading north or south, driving along the highway you will find an unforgettable experience.

Remembering the Forgotten World

Nestled just 7km from the northern end of New Zealand’s famous Forgotten World Highway, Omaka Lodge is the perfect base for delving into the enchanting history and mysteries of The Forgotten World region.

The phrase ‘The Forgotten World’ was first used to describe the remote area between Taumarunui and Stratford that is traversed by the 150km-long State Highway 43.

The rugged but beautiful nature of the isolated road, not to mention the ghost towns it passes through, led to it being known as The Forgotten World Highway.

Road, Rail Or River – It’s Your Choice

Over time, “The Forgotten World” has come to represent a broad area in the central North Island’s Ruapehu District, accessible by road, rail, or river. Driving through this region reveals old settlements and stunning landscapes, perfect for a leisurely journey with a picnic.

For a unique perspective, embark on a self-driven rail cart journey between Taumarunui and Stratford, where you’ll experience breathtaking scenery and delve into New Zealand’s cultural and pioneering history. Alternatively, explore the Whanganui River by jet boat or kayak, with highlights like the iconic Bridge to Nowhere.

For an immersive journey into New Zealand’s remote past, Omaka Lodge offers a convenient and comfortable stay.
